Glaze Research Course –
Design Your Own Ceramic Glazes
As a student in my early years I never saw the need to fully understand chemistry.
letter in life first as a photographer and later as a ceramicist I cannot do without it.
Glaze course fall 2026
We move between theory and practice::
Theoretical part
We look at what a glaze is, how it behaves, and what to look for making a stable glaze. Topics include colour development, matt vs glossy surfaces, glaze quality and durability (including food and dishwasher safety), common glaze defects, and methods of control and adjustment.
Practical part
Hands-on testing forms the core of the course. You will mix and test glazes on different clay bodies, develop a base glaze for electric firing, measure specific gravity, and build a structured testing system. We also use digital tools (glaze software, knowledge base, and archive systems) to document and refine results.
The course is suitable for both beginners and experienced makers who want to deepen their understanding of glaze development as a material process.
